The 2014 Audi S5 Cabriolet is definitely the pricier vehicle out of the two S models, but it’s not necessarily better. The biggest difference from the coupe variant is the presence of a retractable roof. Otherwise, everything else is very much the same aside from a few minor features. As such, the biggest deciding factor whether this car should be purchased or not is the retractable roof, which means that most will likely pick the coupe over this model.

The 2014 Audi S5 Cabriolet is the second iteration of the S5 model, with the major difference being a retractable roof. Because of this difference, the Cabriolet variant is pricier than the coupe, costing up $68,800. In general, the S5 is basically the more powerful and pricier version of the A5 Audi, which means that if you want the most feature-rich “5” vehicle on offer, then this is it. The only question is – should you pay the price tag attached? We’ll answer that here.

On the outside, the Audi S5 Cabriolet looks almost identical to the A5 model. There is of course the retractable roof, which sets them apart, but other than that there are very few differences. The first thing you’ll notice when looking at this car is a corporate design feel that doesn't seem unnecessary or tacked-on. As a whole, it’s a perfect demonstration of what the automaker is capable of. Thanks to its infamous single-frame grille, LED accent lighting, finely-crafted sheetmetal and stylish profile, the S5 is a real looker. There’s nothing that feel extraneous – all the flowing lines and creases create a beautiful symphony of all-around superb design.

On the inside, the S5 offers very attractive yet minimalistic design along with high-quality materials. Functionality is not always there, but this interior is still impressive. Some of the more annoying features include a dash-mounted controller that comes with the standard MMI system, which can be tough to use due to the unintuitive console-mounted controller you get with the upgraded MMI Navigation Plus system.

When it comes to seating, S5 offers standard sport seats at the front, which are reasonably comfortable during long trips, though lateral support is lacking unfortunately. There’s also a significant lack of headroom in the back seating area, which means that they are only good for small kids or luggage.

Since this is a Cabriolet, the retractable soft top reduces cargo space, though not by much thanks to its superb design. Plus, it’s so well insulated from that it almost feels like you’re driving coupe rather than a convertible. With the top down, the S5’s trunk can accommodate 10.2 cubic feet of cargo, which is only two cubic feet less than what you get with the coupe. You also get folding rear seatbacks for extra convenience.

Under the hood, the 2014 S5 Cabriolet comes with a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 engine rated at 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. The Cabriolet gets only a seven-speed automated manual transmission that happens to be optional on the coupe. Like the rest of the S5’s, this version comes with all-wheel drive.

Overall, the 2014 Audi S5 Cabriolet is a fantastic vehicle. Expensive, yes, but fantastic nevertheless. Should you pay extra for the roof? Probably not. But will you? If you have the money, then probably yes. And we’re not going to even try talking you out of it.

Power and Performance:	The 2014 Audi S5 is motivated by a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine rated at 333 hp and 325 pound-feet of torque. The coupe comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, while the Cabriolet gets a seven-speed automated manual transmission that's optional on the coupe. Every S5 features all-wheel drive. In Edmunds performance testing, an S5 coupe equipped with the automated manual transmission accelerated from a standstill to 60 mph in a scant 4.6 seconds; a convertible, also with the automatic, did the same job in 5.3 seconds. Both of these performances are better than average for cars in their respective classes. The manual-transmission coupe is EPA-rated at 20 mpg in combined driving (17 city/26 highway). The coupe with the automated manual is rated at 21 mpg (18/28), although we managed 23 mpg on the Edmunds 120-mile evaluation loop. Interiors and Special Features:	Just as the 2014 A5's exterior shines as one of its strongest attributes, so does the interior. Clearly, outside and in, if any modern car is rolling sculpture, this one is. Front occupants are treated to leather seats that offer excellent support without sacrificing accessibility, and the driver-oriented gauge cluster and center-stack help lend the cabin a sporty feel. The S5, meanwhile, goes even further with a spread of Nappa leather and a variety of unique dash inlays. Buyers may choose among carbon fiber, brushed aluminum, stainless steel or gray birch. Safety features:	The S5 comes with standard stability control and 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes. The coupe gets six airbags (front, front side, full-length side curtain), while the Cabriolet gets four airbags (front, front side).
