Negotiate Smarter with the Best Car Buying Tools

The 2014 Audi A5 is one of the most beautiful cars Audi has released this year. Available as a coupe or convertible, this vehicle comes with three powerful engines and more special features than one can count. The 4.2-litre V8 engine is especially powerful, being able to produce 450 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque.

If you’re familiar with the Audi A4 lineup, then there’s nothing about the 2014 Audi A5 that should surprise you. Available as a convertible or a coupe, this car is basically the more stylish version of the A4. Its best qualities include its perky design, excellent power output and a huge variety of practical features.

Design-wise, this car exhibits fine attention to detail without seeming over-the-top or needlessly “futuristic.” If you’re fan of Audi’s restrained design choices, then you’ll be impressed with the way this car looks – because it represents this brand perfectly. The A5 comes with Audi’s standard single-frame grille, LED accent lighting, curvaceous fenders and chiselled sheetmetal. On the side, you’ll see stylish creases and sharp details that give this car even more edge.

Once you peek inside, you’ll find a cabin that’s just as stylish as the car’s body. Everything is lovingly sculpted, with sporty details and high-quality materials gracing every nook and crevice. At the front, you get leather seats with impressive support and adjustability, which should keep both the passenger and driver satisfied. The gauge cluster and centre stack are as accessible and easy to read as you’d expect, so no problems there. The rear space is tight, but that’s expected – since all coupes suffer from this problem. Surprisingly enough, the trunk is actually quite generous in terms of space, being 16.3 cubic feet in size. And of course, you can fold the back seats flat, if you want to get more room.

The 2014 A5 is especially noteworthy when you take its special features into account. The standard models come with automatic climate control, 10-speaker AM/FM/CD/satellite radio audio system, pushbutton start with keyless entry, leather seating, power front seats, cruise control, Multi-Media Interface as well as power locks, mirrors and windows. Optional features include iPod connectivity, Bluetooth, rearview camera, side-lane assist and a Bang & Olufsen audio system.

Under the hood, the Audi A5 offers a choice of three engines. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder is the base engine – and it can produce 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while delivering solid fuel economy. If you’re not satisfied with that, then the 3.0-litre supercharged V6 should do it for you since it puts out 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. Finally, if you’re feeling like you need even more power, then there’s also the 4.2-litre V8 engine, which can easily pump out 450 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Its fuel economy is predictably horrendous, but with that much power, who cares?

In the end, the 2014 Audi A5 is a fantastic car. It offers everything you would expect from Audi, which is always a good thing. So, if you’re not sure whether to get it or not, we say go for it! Alternatives to consider include BMW 3-Series and Lexus IS.

Power and Performance:

As a base powerplant, Audi's superb 2.0-liter TFSI turbocharged 4-cylinder is almost perfect for the application, and for 2014 receives an increase in horsepower from 211 to 220, with an ample 258 lb-ft of torque. The 3.0-liter supercharged V6 may be the sweet spot, with 333 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. The RS 5's 4.2-liter normally-aspirated V8 may seem old school but, behind the wheel of a car with 450 horsepower, who cares?

Interiors and Special Features:

As is the case with nearly all Audis, the 2014 Audi A5's interior receives high marks for its understated design and top-notch materials. Actual functionality can be hit and miss, however. Performing basic tasks with the standard dash-mounted MMI controller requires a few extra steps compared to the upgraded MMI interface that comes with the optional navigation system. The latter benefits from simplified menus and a more ergonomic console-mounted controller.

The comfort of the front seats is quite good for long road trips, but the A5's standard seats lack the type of lateral support that a spirited driver desires. Thankfully, the optional sport seats remedy this problem. Unfortunately, there's no fix for the rear seats, as the lack of head- and legroom makes them suitable only for smaller passengers.

Those who choose the 2014 Audi A5 convertible will certainly appreciate the expediency of the power-operated soft top's operation: It requires only about 15 seconds to raise or lower. With the tight-fitting, multilayer top in place, the interior is so well insulated from noise and weather that you may forget you're driving a convertible. Even better, the al fresco driving experience doesn't come at the expense of trunk space. Thanks to the use of a fabric top instead of a more elaborate hardtop, the trunk can still accommodate 10.2 cubic feet of cargo when the top is folded down, only 2 cubes less than the coupe. Both body styles feature folding rear seats for added convenience.

Safety features:

The 2014 Audi A5 is a modern, well-built vehicle, but neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have yet conducted crash tests to determine just how safe they might be in the event of an accident.

Low sales volumes and a high sticker price commonly conspire to keep some vehicles off the radar of both testing agencies, and while the lack of results means we don't have any firm evidence of their safety, the A5 and its S5 and RS5 siblings do offer a full complement of modern safety equipment.

Every A5/S5/RS5 comes standard with dual front and side airbags, traction and stability control, and anti-lock brakes. Cabriolet models miss out on the otherwise-standard side curtain airbags due to its topless construction, but the convertibles do gain larger side airbags and pop-up rollbars that deploy when sensors determine a rollover is imminent.

Throughout the A5 range, visibility is very good, though the Cabriolet's soft top can limit rearward visibility somewhat. An available rearview camera and reverse parking sensors helps improve low-speed maneuvering safety.

For those with a taste for higher-tech safety enhancements, Audi offers a lane-departure warning system, blind spot monitors, and radar-based cruise control as well as adaptive headlamps.
