It may not be the best car in any one particular area, but it does deliver quality in areas that matter the most – by offering a decent 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, an acceptable cabin and a very unique-looking body. The 2014 Audi A4 allroad is one of the few family wagons that can deliver a rugged stance of a crossover and aggressiveness of a sport sedan. The appearance is definitely an acquired taste, but once you readjust your “vision,” you’ll begin to see its appeal. But, basically, if you’re looking for a family car that’s not an SUV, then you should definitely give this car a look.

On the outside, the 2014 Audi A4 allroad is a looker, but only if you let its beauty engulf you. The main source of this beauty are the car’s matte-finish wheel arches, which add a sense of classiness to the whole look – the same way a good tie complements a quality suit. Sure, the allroad also comes with stainless steel skidplates and other attractive details, but your eye will be drawn to those arches first.

On the inside, the 2014 allroad is most certainly not an SUV, so don’t expect the same level of roominess as in Audi’s Q5 model. What you get is 27 cubic feet of cargo volume, which is almost as good as the 29 cubic feet you get in the Q5 SUV. However, if you decide to fold down the back seats, the difference between the two grows bigger since the allroad provides only 50 cubic feet of space, while the Q5 provides 57. The worst issue in the allroad is the lack of proper legroom in the back, which can make transporting adults a bit of a pain, especially over long distances. As for interior design and quality of materials, both are top-notch, as expected, but this an Audi, so we expect nothing less.

Under the hood, the new Audi A4 allroad unfortunately does not offer much in the way of choices. You get only one engine, sadly, but it’s a good one. The new 2.0-litre TFSI turbocharged four-cylinder can produce up to 220 horsepower, which is nine more than the last year’s offering, and 258 pound-feet of torque. This excellent piece of hardware is combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which features a sport mode as well as the new Quattro all-wheel-drive system, both of which come as a standard. It takes the new engine less than six and a half seconds to accelerate to the 100-km/h mark, which is a marked improvement over the previous engine by a tenth of a second.

The level of responsiveness in this car is not bad either. The transmission shifts effortlessly when you don’t rely on revs, while the pedals react to the driver’s nudges with great precision. It’s a joy to drive this wagon, despite the fact that weighs in at 3,900 pounds.

Overall, the 2014 Audi A4 allroad could make for a fantastic purchase, but only if you actually dig its “unique” appearance, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea. So, if you’re looking for a family car that’s not an SUV yet has SUV-like sensibilities, then give this wagon a try.

You don't have any choice in powertrains, but we have absolutely no issue with the excellent one that Audi installs in all Allroads. The 2.0-liter TFSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine makes nine extra horsepower for 2014—220 hp—but it keeps its 258 lb-ft rating. It's teamed to a responsive eight-speed automatic transmission, with a sport mode, and the latest Quattro all-wheel drive system is standard. This year's bump in power has knocked a tenth of a second off the dash to 60 mph—now 6.4 seconds, officially. From the driver's seat, the 3,900-pound Allroad responds well with any prod from the right foot, and the transmission doesn't hesitate to shift early when you don't need the revs. Gas mileage is officially 20 mpg city, 27 highway according to the EPA, but in an extended test we noted 24 mpg in a nearly 1,000-mile mix of driving and have seen, quite consistently, more than 30 mpg in relaxed highway driving at legal speeds.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2014 Audi Allroad may not look as roomy as the Q5 SUV, but an additional 3.5 inches in length gives it similar cargo volume at 27 (Allroad) vs. 29 cubic feet. With the rear seats folded down, the difference grows to 50 vs. 57 cubic feet. The Allroad does, however, give up a couple inches in rear legroom to the Q5, which is something to consider if you're weighing the two cars and regularly transport adults in back. Moving to the front seats, the Audi Allroad offers the same magic mix of materials, quality and design that keep Audi interiors at the top of the rankings.

Safety features:

The 2014 Audi allroad comes with standard stability control, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes and six airbags (front, front side, full-length side curtain). Rear side airbags are optional on all trims. 

The allroad has not been crash-tested, but its A4 platform-mate received a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. The independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the A4 its highest rating of Good in all tests except the new small overlap front test, where the lowest rating of Poor was assessed (the A4 is hardly alone in finding this latest test a challenge).
