Quick Look

The 2014 Acura RLX may not flaunt its goodies like many other sedans in this price range, but that’s only because those goodies are actually worth the high price tag. The 3.5-litre V6 engine, which can produce 310 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque, is especially indicative of that. The car’s design, cabin comfort and abundance of features all contribute to its quality too, which means that this is definitely worth a consideration over its more famous competitors, like the BMW 5-Series and Lexus GS.

Full Review

The 2014 Acura RLX is basically a replacement for the RL model, which has been Acura’s flagship sedan for years now. This year’s outing aims to be a luxury car without flaunting the luxury aspect of it, which goes hand-in-hand with Acura’s philosophy of “luxury defined by you.” So, what you get is a vehicle that offers quality but with so much restraint that you might not even notice it at a glance. That being said, everything the RLX has to offer is top-notch – exactly what you expect from a sedan priced at $49,990. BMW and Lexus have quite a competitor in this one.

Despite a few significant additions to the exterior design, the 2014 RLX still looks a little plain. That's not to say that there is absolutely no style to this sedan, but there is something missing here. Along the sides, you'll notice delicate body sculpting, with the RLX's face being dominated by sophisticated headlights, each containing no less than 10 LED lighting elements (yes, 10!) that improve visibility for the driver. In terms of length, the RLX is almost the same length as the RL, but in terms of width, it’s nearly two inches wider, which allows for a slightly roomier cabin.

Those who appreciate space will love the ample back-seat legroom along with the totally usable middle seat. Acura has also endowed the RLX with plenty of trunk space, which is 15.3 cubic feet large. Not bad for a sedan. You also get in high-quality materials arranged in a modern but not over-stylized layout. The dash is cleanly arranged with intuitive climate controls, a seven-inch haptic-feedback touchscreen featuring large icons and switchgear that “flows” with a premium feel.

Under the hood you get a 3.5-liter V6, with the sole transmission being a six-speed automatic, featuring steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for manual control. If you press RLX's "sport mode" button, the sedan will behave sportier, with throttle sensitivity, steering response and P-AWS system operation for an enhanced sense of driver control. To maximize engine efficiency, the V6 offers direct injection and the ability to run in fuel-saving three-cylinder mode at low engine loads. In other words, it’s a highly adaptable hunk of metal.

So, is the 2014 Acura RLX worth its near-$50,000 price tag? This will largely depend on what you want out of it. The only issue as far as we are concerned is the absence of a decent engine selection, which means that you can’t really lower that hefty price tag. However, if you can afford this car, then definitely give it a look.

Power and Performance:

The Acura RLX finds itself in a performance arena that used to have the gentle ambiance of the Westminster Dog Show, but now feels more like Thunderdome. When the former RL was new, 300 horsepower was supercar territory; now, that's the base output for some of the RLX's hottest competition, and the 400-hp mark is an easy hurdle for some of its pricey mid-size luxury competitors.

Even among the milder editions of those other aspiring sedans, the Acura RLX's 310-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 isn't a spec-page leader, nor is its 272 pound-feet of torque. It's up 10 hp and 1 lb-ft over the RL's 3.7-liter V-6, but it pales next to the Lincoln MKS EcoBoost's 365 horsepower, or the Hyundai Genesis R-Spec's 429 hp.

Interiors and Special Features:

Somebody once said "space is the ultimate luxury." Obviously that person never owned a yacht or enjoyed a private concert from Beyonce, but those who truly relish space will appreciate the ample rear-seat legroom and usable middle seat of the RLX. That roominess extends rearward to the spacious 15.3-cubic-foot trunk. The sedan's ample quarters are adorned in uplevel materials arranged in a contemporary but not excessively stylized layout while the dash is cleanly arranged featuring intuited climate controls, a 7-inch haptic-feedback touchscreen featuring large icons, and switchgear that moves with a premium feel.

Safety features:

The 2014 RLX comes with antilock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. A rearview camera is standard, but you have to move all the way up to the Advance package to get front and rear parking sensors. That package is also your ticket to collision mitigation and lane keeping assist. A blind spot monitoring system is included starting with the Technology package trim level.

In Edmunds testing, the 2014 RLX managed a 60-0-mph braking distance of 120 feet, an average number for this class.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has performed its battery of tests on the RLX, resulting in a top score of "Good" in all tests for moderate-overlap and small-overlap frontal-offset impact safety, side-impact safety, roof strength, and seatbelt and head restraint design for whiplash reduction.
