The 2014 Acura ILX deliberately caters to young professionals, offering luxury and affordability in one package. Its cabin, body and safety equipment are all stellar, but its powertrains could use a bit of a boost in terms of power and efficiency.

The 2014 Acura ILX is as close to affordability as Acura can get, while offering a generous amount of features, sporty exterior design and top-notch safety equipment. Unlike its more lavish cousins, like the TL and MDX, the ILX is meant to appeal to young professionals – since they’re the ones who are likely to be in the market for “pseudo-luxury.” And with the price of $27,990, this is as cheap as it gets in Acuraland.

For this price, you actually get a very decent external body. It has extended hood, short backside, aerodynamic lines as well as low and wide proportions. Because of that, its body is both elegant and sporty – but in a subtle way. The 2014 ILX manages to avoid overly-futuristic aspects of its contemporaries, like the CT 200h and Buick Verano, while also dropping the features that would make it look boring. If there’s one aspect we’re not fond of, it would be the car’s shield-like grille, which looks a little off-putting. Other than that, it’s a very pretty car.

On the inside things aren’t so bad ether – especially for a “cheaper” car like this one. The front seats are spacious enough to accommodate adults of all size. The back bench, however, is somewhat tight, so it’s best reserved for kids. Some of the features include dual-zone climate control, power tilt/slide moonroof, Bluetooth capability, iPhone compatible USB port, Pandora radio, keyless entry and many more. You won’t feel shorthanded when it comes to features – Acura has made sure of that.

The new Acura ILX also shines when it comes to safety, having earned top results in nearly every crash test. For instance, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named it its Top Safety Pick, while National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded it with five stars overall, while giving it four stars for frontal impact and five stars for side impact tests. So, while it lacks certain advanced features, it’s still one of the safest cars around. Some of its safety features include anti-lock brakes, electronic brake distribution, brake assist, tire-pressure monitoring systems and a whole set of airbags.

If there’s one area where the Acura ILX underperforms, it would be under the hood. The sedan comes with three different engines, and all of them are a bit of a disappointment. This probably how Acura has managed to lower the price. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder is definitely the weakest yet most affordable engine in the whole lineup. It can produce 150 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque, and can be paired only with a five-speed automatic. Then there is the 2.4-litre four-cylinder, which can generate 201 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. This is available only with a six-speed manual gearbox, which may turn certain drivers away from getting it. Finally, the ILX is also available as a Hybrid car with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission. This one can pump out only 111 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque.

In terms of fuel economy, the most efficient engine is the 1.5-litre one since that’s what it was meant for, but you’ll lose plenty of power as a result. If you’re looking for more power, then the 2.4-litre engine is obviously the way to go, but it doesn’t provide a decent trade-off in fuel economy for the small amount of power that it provides.

Despite being a disappointment under the hood, the 2014 Acura ILX is still a very solid sedan. If you’re looking for a touch of luxury for a relatively affordable price, then there’s not better option that this.

Power and Performance:

Powering the base 2014 ILX is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 150 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission offered is a five-speed automatic that sends its power to the front wheels. In Edmunds performance testing, this powertrain brought the ILX from zero to 60 mph in 9 seconds. That's average for a compact economy car but slow for a compact sedan wearing a premium badge. Fuel economy is respectable at 24 mpg city/35 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined.

The ILX 2.4 with the Premium package comes with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that's rated at 201 hp and 170 lb-ft. A six-speed manual is the only available transmission. In Edmunds performance testing, the ILX 2.4 went from zero to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds. This is average for both entry-level luxury sedans with a base engine and regular midsize sedans with an upgraded four-cylinder or V6 engine. Fuel economy ratings stand at 22/31/25.

Interiors and Special Features:

The ILX's interior is well constructed, but the materials used aren't really a step up from top non-luxury sedans. Similarly, the design features Acura's typical high-tech vibe, but it's nowhere near as luxurious in here as in the classy TSX.

Nevertheless, if you're looking for high-tech features, the ILX definitely delivers. There is a 5-inch display screen topping the center stack for the myriad infotainment functions, and smartly placed buttons and knobs to control them. A 6-inch screen comes with the navigation system, as do voice command functionality (navigation and audio) and a nice-sounding ELS audio system.

Special care was used in designing the seats to be supportive, yet not give the impression of confinement or hardness. The ILX is also pretty spacious for a compact car, with a decent amount of backseat room. Still, headroom can be snug for 6-footers, due to the car's standard sunroof.

Trunk space, at 12.4 cubic feet, is average, and the opening is a little narrow. The rear seat folds down to facilitate carrying longer items, but the seatback is not split to permit a mix of long cargo and a passenger or two in the backseat.

Safety features:

The 2014 Acura ILX has earned some truly great crash-test ratings, and while it lacks some of the advanced active-safety feature, all the essentially passive-safety items are there.

Vehicle Stability Assist (stability and traction control); anti-lock brakes; electronic brake distribution; brake assist; and tire-pressure monitoring systems; plus dual-stage front, front-side, and side-curtain airbags are all included; as well as design elements intended to mitigate pedestrian injury.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given the ILX a five-star score overall, including four stars for frontal impact and five stars for side impact, and in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) testing, it's been awarded Top Safety Pick status, with top 'good' scores in all categories of testing.

The one test the ILX hasn't yet been put through is the new IIHS small overlap frontal test; check back to see if this model earns the same high mark that its Honda Civic cousin already has.
